Accreditation
In October 2004, Phelps received the highest designation awarded by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. The designation, "accreditation," means that the hospital is in compliance with all standards.
Previous to 2004, the Joint Commission issued scores following its surveys. In November 2001, scores were awarded to Phelps as follows: 94% for the hospital overall, 98% for Hospice, and 99% for Behavioral Health Services. In 1998, Phelps received special recognition from JCAHO: Accreditation with Commendation, which was an honor reserved for only 15 percent of surveyed hospitals in the nation. After 1998, the JCAHO ceased bestowing the "commendation" designation on outstanding surveyed organizations.
Phelps is licensed by the New York Department of Health and the New York State Department of Mental Health. It is accredited by the College of American Pathologists, the American College of Radiology, the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS), and the American Dental Association, among others.
