Cardiac Rehab
Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation
Overview
The Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center is designed for all those who have coronary artery disease or have had a heart attack, angina, or by-pass surgery. Those who are at high risk for developing coronary artery disease because of their family history, high blood pressure, diabetes, or elevated cholesterol may also participate in this program.
The Course of Exercise
The goal is to maximize each person's aerobic capacity through regular exercise. A personalized exercise program is developed based on one's individual medical condition and current state of physical fitness.
Exercise at the Center is performed on a bicycle ergometer, treadmill, Nu-Step, and rowing machine. Each person wears a non-restrictive telemetry pack for continuous observation of the heart before, during, and after exercise.
A registered nurse is in constant attendance for exercise supervision, cardiac monitoring, and cardiac education.
Phase One
The period immediately following a cardiac event involving in-hospital recovery.
Phase Two
The conditioning phase of the program is twelve weeks. In order to achieve the desired effect, attendance three times per week is advisable.
Phase Three
The third phase of the program is a maintenance or a home program.
The maintenance program consists of three sessions a week, unmonitored, but still working with a nurse.
The home program suggests that you walk or purchase an ergometer bicycle and exercise three or four times a week. The nurse will assist you in developing a program.
How to Join
Your physician must refer you and send a brief medical history to the Center. Your physician need not be affiliated with Phelps.
A treadmill stress test must be conducted within no more than six months prior to starting the program. The information assists our professional staff in designing an exercise program specifically for you.
When we receive all of your medical information, it will be reviewed by Kenneth C. Kaplan, MD, Medical Director of the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center program. An exercise program will be written for you, and we will call you to discuss a time for your attendance.
