Phelps Board Elects Dugan, Merryman, Goldsmith as Members

The Board of Directors of Phelps Memorial Hospital Center elected two new members at its March 28 meeting - Sean F.X. Dugan of Sleepy Hollow and Andrew C. Merryman of Irvington - and re-elected Jim Goldsmith of Ossining as community representative and President of the Phelps Auxiliary.
Sean Dugan is a senior partner and trial attorney at Martin Clearwater & Bell, LLP, where he is engaged in the defense of all aspects of professional liability claims on behalf of physicians and other health care professionals, medical groups, and health care institutions. He has been associated with MC&B since 1979 and became a member of the firm in 1983.
In 1991, Mr. Dugan obtained a Masters Degree in Environmental Law to assist
his firm in the defense of complex personal injury exposure claims such as those
involving mold, lead, asbestos, and various medications. He completed Harvard
University's Program on Negotiation and obtained a Mediator Training Certificate
from the United States District Court, Southern District of New York. Dugan
is admitted to practice law before both the State and Federal Courts in New
York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. He is listed in Who's Who in American Law,
and is certified as a civil trial specialist.
Mr. Dugan completed his undergraduate studies at State University College at
Oneonta, (B.A., 1973), earned his law degree at Brooklyn Law School (J.D., 1977)
and his LlM, Environmental Law at Pace University School of Law (1991).
He served his community as a member of Sleepy Hollow's Environmental Advisory Council, and as a member of his village's Tree Committee.
Sean and his wife, Martha, have lived in Sleepy Hollow for twenty years where they have raised their four children. Martha has been a dedicated volunteer at Phelps for ten years. They founded Phelps' Nursing Promise program with their children three years ago.
Andrew Merryman comes to the Phelps Board after a management consulting career of more than 35 years. Following his graduation from business school in 1969, he became Vice President of a newly-formed consulting and publishing organization. In 1973, he founded his own consulting firm, Brecker & Merryman, Inc; and over the subsequent 25 years, the firm grew to employ more than 40 people.
Andy's consulting practice focused on strategic workforce management, principally for large businesses and other organizations. He managed relationships with more than 300 clients across the United States, in Canada and in many countries overseas. Specific assignments involved change and transition management, workforce and organization development, management succession and development, and internal and employer branding. His own and the firm's practice were devoted to "aligning people with strategy."
In 2000, Brecker & Merryman was sold to Manpower, Inc. and Andy stayed on as Executive Vice President and Deputy Chairman of Manpower's consulting subsidiary, The Empower Group. This organization was formed through the acquisition of 17 consulting firms in the Americas, Europe and Asia. Andy's responsibilities included global practice and management integration and managing all operations in the Americas. He retired from Manpower in 2004.
Andy is past president of The Human Resource Planning Society and an architect of its European affiliate, The European Human Resource Forum. He was also a board member and treasurer of the New York Human Resource Planners. During his years in consulting, he addressed many professional conferences, seminars and workshops sponsored by such organizations as the American Management Association, the American Society for Training and Development, The Association of Internal Management Consultants, and the National Foreign Trade Council.
Andy and his wife, Mary, have lived in Irvington for nearly 30 years. During that time, they raised three children, all of whom now live and work in the New York area. For The Church of St. Barnabas, he has served on the Vestry, as Senior Warden and in various other capacities. During the past three years, he has been a member of the Phelps' Capital Campaign Cabinet and head of the Major Gifts Committee.
A 1964 graduate of Trinity College in Hartford, he recently served for two years on the College's Board of Visitors. He earned his MBA from Columbia University in 1969 with a focus on marketing and human resources.
Jim Goldsmith is currently serving his second term as President of the Phelps Auxiliary, having also served as 1st Vice President, 2d Vice President, and Briarcliff Manor Area Chairman.
Jim retired from Burlington Industries after a thirty-five year career in sales and sales management, dealing with the leading clothes manufacturers in women's wear. He is a graduate of Brown University and attended George Washington School of Law at night while fulfilling his two and a half year military obligation as a member of the Counter Intelligence Corps.
Jim has four children and three grandchildren, has coached his children's teams in soccer, basketball, and softball, and currently resides in Ossining with his wife, Donna and youngest child, Kira.
He does Midnight Runs with a group from his Temple and when needed, pitches
on the Temple softball team.
