Critical Care Nursing

Critical Care Nursing is the specialty within nursing that deals specifically with human responses to life threatening situations. Although a distinct specialty, Critical Care Nursing is inseparable from the profession of nursing as a whole. As members of the nursing profession, we hold the same commitment to protect, maintain, and restore health for our patients.

Nursing interventions focus on patient adaptation, restoration of health, and preservation of patients’ rights, including the right to refuse treatment and to die with dignity and comfort. The critical care nursing interventions require constant intensive multidisciplinary assessments, intervention and evaluation in order to restore stability, prevent complications, and achieve and maintain optimal responses to treatment.

Underlying the application of these interventions is a holistic approach that expresses human warmth and caring. This art in conjunction with the science of critical care nursing is essential to the interaction between the critical care nurse and the critically ill patient/family in attaining optimal outcomes.
