Inpatient Psychiatric Services for Seniors Offered at Phelps
Special psychiatric program for seniors offers support at a time in life
when they need it most
In a continuing effort to meet the needs of the aging population in Westchester,
a new inpatient psychiatric program designed specifically for seniors is now
being offered by the Behavioral Health Department at Phelps Memorial Hospital
Center. The new senior program is an expansion of the existing psychiatric service
at Phelps, in which an interdisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychiatric
nurses, social workers and recreational therapists provides treatment for individuals
18 and older.
The senior program of psychiatric care includes a daily regimen of therapy,
plus educational and recreational groups in areas such as exercise, gardening,
arts and crafts, music appreciation, movement, personal growth, life skills
and nutrition education. A special lounge has been set aside for seniors where
they can view movies, play cards and socialize.
"As people age, they often need help dealing with psychiatric and behavioral
problems, such as depression or substance abuse brought on by increased isolation,"
said psychiatrist Bonita Chapman, MD. "This new inpatient program offers
seniors insight, coping skills and support at a time in life when they may need
it most."
In addition to the inpatient psychiatric unit, Phelps has a Behavioral Rehabilitation
Unit that provides inpatient treatment for adults with a dual diagnosis of mental
illness and chemical addiction (MICA). The Hospital also has outpatient services
on the campus and in locations in the surrounding community that offer mental
health counseling, continuing day treatment, supportive case management, and
chemical dependency services.
